International migration is easier today than it has ever been before due to a number of different circumstances.  Advances in transportation and communication technology together with the globalisation of a lot of the world’s markets means that the world is in many ways a much smaller place than it has ever been before.
With the fall of the Soviet Union and the introduction of the European Union, many global citizens have a degree of freedom that they did not have in previous decades.  This gives people the opportunity to live and work in different countries by migrating across their national borders.  Globalisation in general and the liquidity of a cheap international labour force in particular, have had a big effect on the steel industry worldwide.

Over the last 15 years a number of steel manufacturing plants have been able to hire inexpensive labour and cut down on their production costs.  This has had a number of ongoing effects for the steel industry.

International migration can be defined as the situation that occurs when ever a person has crossed over their national boundaries for a particular period of time.  Migration is a term normally used to refer to the permanent settling of a person in another country, rather than a visit or holiday situation.  There is however a lot of middle ground in which a person may not know how long they are planning on staying in a particular country.  A lot of the global migration that occurs today is due to economic factors between nations, although there are also political considerations as well as others.  Many people migrate in order to receive a higher wage and a better standard of living in their chosen country.  There are people who have migrated from a place of lower GDP and a lower general standard of living who may be willing to work for lower rates in their adopted nation.  Large industrial plants, factories and farming communities can benefit economically if they are willing to take on some of these lower cost employees.

The steel industry has definitely been affected by these population trends, as steel plants in wealthy nations have started to source part of their workforce from the migrated population.  This does have a social impact on the ethnic relations in traditional steel communities, as local workers may often miss out on employment due to alower cost workforce being available.  The production of high-grade steel (Edelstahlrohre) is fairly uniform around the world, so skill sets of international migrants can be translated effectively.  This translation of skills along with a lot of the unskilled work that is available in steel plants mean that the steel industry is one of the industries at the forefront of international migration issues.

In order to produce the various components such as Butt Weld Fittings (Schweissfittings) and screw fittings, a high number of employees are normally needed in any one plant.  This means that their is always a demand for new workers in the steel industry, and from an employers perspective, a cheap workforce is always better.  These are the perfect conditions for economically driven international migration to take place.
